Because mainstream hip-hop remains in a creative rut, the most exciting things happening in the genre are on the fringes, which is where the funky troupe Atmosphere exists. Hailing from the decidedly un-hip-hop epicenter of Minneapolis, Atmosphere is the brainchild of rapper Slug (whose mother calls him Sean Daley). He’s as smart about his collaborators as he is his lyrics, working with DJ and producer Ant, and a touring ensemble that adds some flavor with guitar and keys. It’s worth noting that Slug has a sense of humor. The band’s latest is the infectious and brilliantly titled When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint that Shit Gold.
