Hailing from the U.K.’s Isle of Man, Back Door Slam originated as a power trio in the hallowed tradition of Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience and — jumping ahead a decade but still before their time — Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble. The original lineup recorded Back Door Slam’s 2007 debut, Roll Away, which mixed meaty blues rock with eloquently crafted acoustic balladry and led to well-received festival appearances and tours with the likes of fellow guitar-rock jammers Govt. Mule. But in January of this year, the band members announced that they were splitting up, with only Knowles continuing on with the Back Door Slam name. As the saying goes, one door slams shut, another blows open. Knowles is already at work on a new Back Door Slam album with co-producer Peter Frampton, and he hit the road in April opening for guitar godfather Jeff Beck.
