You could be excused for thinking Canadian duo Crystal Castles’ self-titled debut album from 2008 was a lost relic from the ’80s. For starters, there’s the band’s name, a reference to an old Atari video game. Then there’s the sound: processed robotic vocals by ringleader Ethan Kath with a synthy backdrop and a crisp keyboard figure on “Crimewave.” Bleepy keys and Alice Glass’ shrieky distorted vocal move “Courtship Dating” over an Aquanet fog of a retro digitized arrangement. The charm is Kath’s deliberately lo-fi presentation, a gritty and compelling touch that gives all this electronic business a dash of soul.
