If Deerhunter hailed from Brooklyn, you wouldn’t bat an eye. But this art-rock band fronted by a cross-dressing, flamboyant and lanky tall guy with Marfan Syndrome is from Atlanta, which adds an unexplainable sense of daring weirdness to its music. Bradford Cox could be Thurston Moore’s long-lost stepchild, throwing his sometimes creepy, sometimes screechy voice in front of music that often swells quietly before snapping into a feedback-drenched explosion of post-punk fury. A messy self-titled debut was quietly released five years ago, but 2007’s Cryptograms found more method to Cox’s madness, and as a result more people began targeting Deerhunter. The band quickly returned with Microcastle, a more varied set of songs that countered some of Cox’s artier leanings with more easily digested psych-rock fare.
