What’s in a name? In the case of Hertfordshire, England’s Friendly Fires, everything. There’s just something irresistibly soft, cuddly and friendly about the trio’s peppy-but-dreamy, hook-laden electro-pop, which on songs like “Skeleton Boy” and “Jump in the Pool” evokes the playful spirit of ’80s disco kings Erasure. But when singer/keyboardist Ed MacFarlane, guitarist Edd Gibson and drummer Jack Savidge show their more funky side — as on “On Board,” a tune featured in a TV ad for the Wii Fit — they spark enough fire to heat up even the coolest dance floor. The band members have been playing music together (in different outfits) since their early teens, but didn’t really take off with Friendly Fires until after college, when a pair of EPs, the breakthrough single “Paris” and a U.K. tour opening for Interpol led to their signing to England’s XL Recordings and the late ’08 release of the band’s self-titled debut.
