Former Wives bandmates Dean Spunt and Randy Randall do the duo thing but with none of the niceties of the Black Keys or White Stripes. As No Age, the duo creates a skull-hammering post-rock sound that often blasts by in under two minutes. That said, the noise-rock tag that is often placed on the band does it something of a disservice, as evidenced by Randall’s almost melodic guitar and Spunt’s muted drumming on “Eraser.” Of course, such gentleness gets knocked over the head in an explosion of sound and Spunt’s almost chant-like vocals. No Age is a little arty for the mainstream, but its songs are powerfully turgid and bracing live.
