The hauntingly beautiful music of Sillwater, Okla.’s Other Lives seems tailor made for the gloaming of the day. And it’s not just because of member Jenny Hsu’s cello, either; it’s the whole moody, classical-inspired mix of pianos, guitars, violin and organ, with pianist/guitarist Jesse Tabish’s suitably twilit vocals and the band’s mournful melodies sealing the deal. The five-piece (also featuring Josh Onstott on bass and organ, Colby Owens on drums and Jonathon Mooney on piano and violin) started playing together as an instrumental project called Kunek in 2005, recording one album under that moniker (2006’s Flight of the Flynns). But adding vocals and a refined sense of richly organic indie-rock songcraft took them to the next level. Joey Waronker produced the outfit’s self-titled debut as Other Lives, released this year, and the album’s “Black Water” has already been featured on Grey’s Anatomy.
