Perhaps growing up in Wasilla, Ak., warps your geographical sense. Maybe it puts you a little too close to magnetic North (or ex-Mayor Sarah Palin). That’s about as good an explanation as any for Portugal. The Man’s moniker, though lead singer and guitarist John Gourley has also attributed its rather convoluted inspiration to David Bowie. The now Portland-based foursome of indie-experimental-art rockers tends to be a little off-the-compass in other ways, too; witness the band’s above-average attraction for punctuation: Its 2006 debut album was titled Waiter: “You Vulture!” Portugal. The Man’s latest, released this year, is The Satanic Satanist. Following the release of 2008’s Censored Colors, Alternative Press named Gourley Best Vocalist of the Year.

hands down best show i saw at lolla.
5 months agoDiscovered these guys at Lolla and they are my new favorite band. Picked up Satanic Satanist (nice art and packaging!), Censured Colors and Waiter: You! Vultures, and they are incredible — completely hooked. The show at Lolla was fantastic, and I have a feeling these guys will be getting some major notice soon. The festival was fantastic overall, but I am most psyched about Portugal. TM

6 months agoi missed seeing them i slept too long,
6 months agobut i wasnt disappointed because i really dont like their newest album that much. its just that it sounds less unique i guess
and isn’t the last song from the setlist called “AKA M80 The Wolf” ?
i could be wrong but i’m 90% sure unless its a different cut of it or something
One of the best sets @ lolla. It was truly a treat to see these guys play as a headliner rather than as an opener.
6 months agoBEST band at Lolla. Worth 80$…which is good cause the rest of the bands were crap. Snoop was worth it too though.

6 months agoGreat band!!! So excited to see them again and again! Caught them on tour with RxBandits (maybe last year…?), they’re great! In my opinion, would be the best David Bowie cover band ever! but until then, I’ll enjoy their stuff too!
6 months agoThis band is amazing! I’m probably more excited to see this show than any of the others!
7 months agoWay to go Portugal. The Man!
Jason Sechrist (the drummer) still has video tapes from when we were in the band Railer together. When we went on tour around the US, his brother Jesse came along as our roadie.
In Florida, some shit went down and Jason ended up having to choose between his brother and going on to tour the rest of the US – on that same tour was our guitarist / keyboardist Ray (now drummer for Builders and the Butchers).
That was a crazy tour, we almost died driving off of mountains, getting chased by old men with guns on the highway, sleeping in parking lots, and driving off away from insta-groupies.
Can’t make Lolapalooza but will be at Sasquatch
9 months agoThis band is incredible. First time I’ve ever heard them but they are going to be awesome to see I’m sure.
