There will be no shortage of rock at Lollapalooza 2009, but odds are few bands will rock harder than Chicago’s own rousing but angst-ridden Rise Against. The loud and liberal foursome first came together 10 years ago and released The Unraveling in 2001 — the first of a series of records that reveal an aggressive but surprisingly melodic hardcore sound. They broke into Billboard’s Top 10 in 2006 with the release of their fourth album, The Sufferer and the Witness. Last year’s politically-charged punk album, Appeal to Reason, marked their fifth release and prompted Rolling Stone’s assessment of the effort as “an honest appraisal of their rise from the indie trenches into the mainstream.” Translation: Expect to fight a large fist-pumping crowd to catch these up-and-coming undergrounders.
