The Bloody Beetroots is the brainchild of Italian-born producer/DJ Bob Rifo, who initially conceived the project as an offshoot of his electro-punk band, Bob Rifo’s Gang. It wasn’t long before his Beetroots “alter-ego” took on a life of its own, though. After a pair of breakout remixes in 2007 (“Maniac” of Flashdance fame and Timbaland’s “Miscommunication,” reinvented as “Discommunication”), the Beetroots were signed to Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label and soon after released the hard-banging ROMBO EP. The disc is an explosive mix of Rifo’s varied musical influences (electronica, cyberpunk, pop and even classical) but doesn’t quite prepare listeners for the full-on assault of the Bloody Beetroots’ live show, for which Rifo and onstage sidekick Tommy Tea don black Spiderman “Venom” masks and really bring the noise.
