Loud and proud to be from New Brunswick, N.J., the Gaslight Anthem is one of the most interesting bands to spring from the punk soil in years. Neo-punk bands are a dime a dozen, so one must do something different to get noticed. Gaslight’s secret is singer/guitarist Brian Fallon, whose voice has an earnest Springsteen-y soulfulness that suggests he’s tapped into music that pre-dated Social Distortion. His band is in lockstep with him. Songs from last year’s The ’59 Sound aren’t so hung up in their pursuit of punk as to skirt the opportunity for quiet, contemplative breaks. The band applies light/dark contrasts deftly, one facet drawing more attention to the other.
